Lead Poisoning Prevention Week: Protecting Our Drinking Water
Oct. 25–31 is Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, an opportunity to raise awareness about the risks of lead exposure and the importance of protecting our drinking water.
Lead can enter drinking water when pipes, service lines or plumbing fixtures containing lead corrode. Because lead cannot be seen, tasted or smelled, testing is the only way to determine whether lead is present in drinking water.
Residents can take steps to help protect their households by learning about their home's plumbing and service line materials, using cold water for drinking and cooking, and contacting their water provider for information about water quality and testing. Boiling water does not remove lead.
Protecting drinking water also requires ongoing investment in the infrastructure that delivers it to our homes. Maintaining and replacing aging pipes and service lines helps support the quality and reliability of our community's water system.
Learn more about the value of water and visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's website for more information about lead in drinking water and ways to reduce exposure.
